Super Vitamins

~My Mother in law suggested I start taking Juice Plus, I've heard others say I should take Biotin for my hair, what vitamins do you take and how do they help you?

(I ask this after having my entire family pass around various illnesses the entire month of June)

Hey Kristin,
It's Annie (from CA). I connected to your blog from Brody's, from Jeff's, from Dan Ray's. I hope we can catch up sometime!
Anyway, about vitamins, I take a B Complex (time-released) every day. It helps me with my energy level and may also keep the mosquitos from biting me - seriously! The one I take also contains Vitamin C, to keep my immune system working at its best.
My advice: do your research on Juice Plus...
Take care!

I take a generic multivitamin, one of those One-A-Day things.

As far as taking large amounts of some particular supplement or another -- I don't know. I've been through a few phases like that in my life, and really can't say that it made a big difference.

I think as long as we eat a reasonably healthy version of "the American diet", that includes a fair amount of balance and variety, we are mostly covered for a majority of important things nutritionally. Special circumstances, like pregnancy, disease, athletic training, or whatever may require special supplementation, but beyond that there just isn't a lot of convincing science behind most of that stuff.

Studies also find from time to time that there is a risk in taking excessive amounts of certain supplements for a prolonged period of time. So I figure a multivitamin makes sure I get a full supply of most important things, fills in gaps in my diet, but doesn't overdo it with anything in particular.

Besides a prenatal vitamin, I take calcium citrate. I've been taking in daily for about two years now.

Hi Annie!
You should e mail me, I'd love to hear how you are doing! my e mail is kweidemann@mac.com
B complex... can you get that at a Walgreens?

Multivitamins are good I am sure, and eating well on top of it too.

Lisa, how are you feeling? Are you getting close? Why do you take Calcium citrate?

I take calcium supplements, and a b complex. (which you can definitely get at walgreens)

I agree it's important to do your research. Just because it's OTC doesn't mean it's safe.

B12 is a good energy booster. I take vitamin E, fish oil and flaxseed everyday. They help with dry eye. My eye doctor suggested the combination and it works very well. They've also helped a lot with dry mouth that I get as a result of prescription meds I must take. I give my kids a multi-vitamin and one with eucinacia (spelling). It's supposed to be good for the immune system and they rarely get colds, etc.

hey i have heard a lot of good things about juice plus, a family i babysat for daily had their entire family including the kids on it. not sure it has anything to do with it but they hardly ever got sick and i babysat for them for 3 years, i take it now although i easily forget but i have noticed that when i do take it i have more energy.... want me to mail you some or something??? i think you have to order a whole case so if you want i can mail you a bottle of the fruit and a bottle of the veggies.... then you can try it.... anyways, i am not normally a vitamin person but i do really like these :) and i havent heard anything bad about them and the kids love them.

Good to know! My mom in law takes them and swears that they've helped her not get sick as much. They sound good.

I wouldn't want to take them from you, I'll just check into them more, thanks for the info about them.

Hey Kristin! I have heard that juice plus is great. We have taken for about 2 years now some vitamins through a company called Mannatech. Really great stuff. The science behind it is glyconutrients. It's actually very fascinating stuff. All about cell to cell communication in our bodies. All this to say that it has totally cut down on our sicknesses and we are around it alot and we have a family of 5 as well. But we have definitely noticed a difference. Good luck! I can get more info to you if you are interested.

Kristin,

You can get flaxseed oil in pill form. I personally get the big bottles at Sams Club. The fish oil is excellent too. It's loaded with omega 3 oils which are great for many things. They help with memory, brain development, tear production, eye health, etc.

The Sams club brand is "Members Mark" and I've always had good luck with any of their products I get there. It saves money too. Do you have a club nearby?

who are you anonymous? That is good that you have found vitamins that you like and that make you feel better, and keep you from getting sick. I am about to go off of pre natal vitamins and looking into what I should take

Beth~ I have heard good things about fish oil now that I think about it. We do have a Sams club near by too, but we've got a Costco membership right now. I'm sure they've got it too.

fish oil is good for the heart, too, right? I have some but always forget to take it.

Calcium for bones. B for everything else that might be a deficiency in my diet. ha. Also, it was recommended that I take it since I have to stay away from certain foods because I get the gout. (yes, I'm a 27 year old female with gout..not happy)

I do yoga?

Does that kindof count?

It's supposed to rid your body of toxins. Except for this past week, I haven't been sick in the longest time. And I think the biggest reason I got sick was because I did a major scrubbing of the floors and showers. I think the mildew and dust attacked me, or something like that.

I have a friend who works with Mannatech, and she tells me wonderful things about their products. I haven't done any research myself, but it might be another line worth looking into.

Okay, so I am the lame annonymous person who forgot to write their name in. Sorry! Anyways, the Mannatech stuff is definitely worth looking into. They actually just had a big thing on it on 20/20. Maybe I can try to email you some info on it.

I'd stay away from any product sold through multilevel marketing -- that includes Mannatech and Juice Plus...too much hard-selling and false advertising.

I am suprised that anyone is saying that they heard good things about Juice Plus. I Googled it because I was curious too and almost everthing I found was negative. Sloan Kettering, University of California, the Better Business Bureau, Wikipedia, MLMWatch, and a dozen nutritionists all seem to think it's an overpriced, overhyped scam. Anything good that we might hear about it is probably because it is sold by multilevel marketing, which means lots of hype and questionable claims made by people who are caught up in the "cult".
